This project has been wonderful and a huge learning curve for me. A Nursery for pre-school children required an interesting space outside the building where children could enjoy the outside whilst learning about plants and wild life. Initially the space was just a grassed flat area at the front of the building and overgrown at the back. I was asked to project manage. I sectioned the whole project into three phases and created a full design. The owner hopes to complete all three phases in the next three years. Phase 1 is nearly completed with the electrics and living tunnel being fitted by the end of this year.
I managed to get a really good team of artists, builders and fabricator together to create a much more interesting space for the children. This incorporated roadways with traffic lights, summer houses, musical instrument, totem poles, mushroom seating, a garage, sculpture and lively planting schemes.
The second phase will be the growing area where raised beds will be added, greenhouse and pond. The third phase will be the climbing area.
Karl Barker is a chainsaw wood sculptor from North Yorkshire. He designed and made the totems based on the creative drawings and ideas created by the children. The three themes chosen were woodland animals, sea creatures and a traditional but child friendly totem pole. Karl also made the toadstools
